The challenge

Due to the high competition, the management team of the lodge experiences challenges in sales and marketing. The occupancy rate of the last years was generally below average, which is a missed opportunity to increase the social impact.

Your project

Together with the management team of Kiboko Lodge, you will get the opportunity to support writing a sustainable marketing plan on how to increase sales, also in the long term. The goal is to make a plan and that you start implementing already. Are there any quick wins they can make? Even though you might not know all the details about the hospitality industry, your knowledge about marketing and sales can already help a lot. Since the time frame for this project is between 4 - 12 weeks, you will have the chance to immerse yourself in the company, learn more about the charity and training of the street children. The goal is to have a ready to use marketing & sales plan by the end of your stay.

  • Getting to know the lodge, the staff and the training program

  • Make a competitor analysis, visit other lodges and compare products and prices

  • Work on a sales and marketing plan

  • If you think it's needed, you can take new pictures

  • If you want, you can start using the social media channels

  • When you feel confident enough, you can teach the staff how to use social media

About Kiboko Lodge

Kiboko Lodge is a social enterprise, located near Arusha. It is the first lodge in the world run by former street children. The lodge accommodation is part of the Watoto Foundation. This means that an important part of the profit made by the lodge is donated to the Watoto Foundation centres to directly benefit the projects that give these children a better future.


The lodge is located on the slopes of Mount Meru and only 15 minutes from the gate of Arusha National Park, which makes it an attractive location to start or end a safari through Tanzania.


Kiboko Lodge differentiates itself from other lodges in the area because of its purpose-driven business approach. The main goal of the lodge is to have a sustainable business model in which as many former street children as possible can have to chance to follow a hospitality training and get work experiences within the tourism industry.

Why do I have to pay?

We wish we could say volunteering is for free. You are giving your time for free, but you still have to pay money to do a project. Why is this? 

All our projects are based on the needs of the local entrepreneurs. Of course, we want to be able to support them with what they really need, to make sure we don't waste time and money. Visiting the companies, selecting the projects and having someone who is always there to help you, simply cost money.

To make it short, the money you pay is not to do the projects but is to cover the costs of the organisation, your transfer, your accommodation and the support during the preparation, your stay and after you return home.
